Ferie delle Messi, San Gimignano
Medieval era celebration held each year on the last weekend in June in the streets and squares of San Gimignano, enchanting historical city declared World Heritage by Unesco.
Each year the Knights of Santa Fina re-enact the old "Feriae Messium" tradition, celebrated by the entire population as a festivity that preceded the harvest, it was a time for fun with singing, dancing, games and jousts between mounted champions armed with lances.
A historical event that includes food stands with local gastronomic products like oil, wine and saffron plus a large arts and crafts market.
The public is entertained during the festivities by minstrels, musicians, street performers and archers. Costumed horsemen and characters parade in the Historical Pageant on the last Sunday afternoon of the festival ending the celebrations with a chivalrous tournament in the Parco della Rocca, where the 4 quarters of San Gimignano compete. The winning quarter parades through the city and celebrations continue long through the night.
