The Barbarossa festival in San Quirico D'Orcia - Siena
The Barbarossa festival in San Quirico D'Orcia, is more than a typical historical reenactment on the patron saint's day and more heartfelt than a simple event, involving the entire population of a city in the province of Siena.
Since days of yore, the Barbarossa festival has been held on the third weekend in June, this year falling on June 14-15, 2008. The festival is held in the city center, parading from Horti Leonini to culminate at the Collegiale church. The festival celebrates Frederick I of Hohenstaufen, better known as Frederick Barbarossa, who conquered the current lands of San Quirico D'Orcia in 1155. The event culminates with the the reenactment of Barbarossa's coronation as Emperor by Pope Adrian IV on this site. Crowned Emperor, Barbarossa gained the right to to suppress their common enemy, monk Arnold of Brescia, a fervid supporter of communal freedom.
You can experience the Medieval atmosphere in the four delightful city quarters during the weekend event while sampling specialties from the local Valdorciana cuisine and watching the traditional and folk performances. In addition to the historical reenactment, the festival's highlights include unforgettable Medieval flag-waving and archery tournaments between the four quarters (Canneti, Castello, Prato and Borgo).
