The Rose Rodeo
The Rose Rodeo is a unique test of the ability of the Maremmani Cowboys, in which the peculiarity of their work comes into play, based on physical strength, quick reflexes and unusual courage.
On 15 August each year, the cowboys meet at the sports field of Alberese (in the Maremma Regional Park), where the Rodeo is held.
The cowboys are divided into two teams (the Yellow Rose and the Red Rose) and are challenged to a competition of equestrian ability. Two riders of opposing colours face each other in the saddle on horseback and try to tear out the other's team sash. With getaways and hand-to-hand battles in quick succession, the contest continues until all the competitors have faced each other. The winning team is the one which manages to take the most opposing roses.
