Itinerary through mediaeval towns and the Tarocchi Gardens

We set out from Buriano, dominated by its castle towering above the Grosseto plains. Next we go to Montepescali, the so-called "balcony over the Maremma" for its wonderful view. Then on to Borgo di Istia d'Ombrone and Batignano, with its remains of mediaeval walls. Massa Marittima is a masterpiece of mediaeval urban planning and jewel in the crown of the Maremma region. In the south of the Maremma, in the Tuff area, we recommend a visit to Manciano, with its towering Cassero Senese fortification and beautiful panorama, Pitigliano, with its streets dug out of tuff, and on to picturesque Sovana and Sorano; Saturnia, famous for its spa waters, and lastly Alberese, land of the Buttero cowherds and gateway to the Maremma National Park. Near the delightful town of Capalbio you will find the famous Tarocchi Gardens, work of a French contemporary artist, with gargantuan sculptures (12-15m high) of the 22 Tarot cards of the Major Arcana. Don't miss the nearby Roselle archaeological park and the Vetulonia necropolis; Poggio Pelliccia Funeral Mound a few kilometres from Ribolla with the remains of a monumental Etruscan grave; Lake Accesa where graves and the remains of ancient dwellings can be seen.
