TORCIATA OF SAN GIUSEPPE, PITIGLIANO (GR)

It's an unusual and traditional event, which takes place every year in Pitigliano, from 12th to 19th March. This "Torciata di San Giuseppe" dates back to the ancient times and celebrates the arrival of springtime.

Local people, dressed in the traditional white clothing, a long tunic, hood and boots, walk through the streets carrying a burning cane rods on their shoulders. At the end of the journey the arrive in the main square and the fiery rods are joined to make a very big puppet, known as the "Invernacciu".

Entirely made out of wood, the puppet immediately burns into ashes. In the morning after the feast, the women of the village gather the ashes and throw them into fields as a symbol of good luck for the harvest.
